Science Career Programs

• National Youth Science Forum– A 12 day holiday program for students commencing Year 12 who are considering a career in science, engineering or technology. Activities focus on personal development, career awareness and scientific research and experimentation.
• Science and Engineering Challenge– An outreach program for Year 9 and 10 students conducted nationally by the University of Newcastle. Each challenge day offers 250 students a series of competitive activities designed to demonstrate the varied and practical elements of a career in the science and engineering industries and provide information about possible career options.
• The Science Experience– Check out the Queensland dates for these science activities guided by scientists who love their work. Students can perform experiments in laboratories, meet and hear senior lecturers and walk around and experience what it is like to be on the campus of a university.

Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO)

• Sustainable Futures– Sustainable Futures is an educational program that combines the latest in climate science with education in sustainability. (This program was formerly known as CarbonKids.)
• CSIRO Creativity in Science and Technology (CREST) Awards program– A non-competitive program which allows students to undertake real life science and technology research programs involving creativity, perseverance and application. Royal Institution of Australia (RiAus)

• RiAus – Reaching around the country and across the world, RiAus runs a variety of seasonal programs and events.
• STEM Career Packs – Aims to make students aware of careers in STEM and the importance of STEM in their everyday lives. The career resources are aimed at primary, middle school teachers and careers counsellors, which include interview footage and classroom activities aligned to the Australian Curriculum.
• RiAus Education pages– This is home to a number of education projects designed to engage students in STEM and to promote STEM careers.
• Australia’s Science Channel– RiAus has launched RiAus TV, which aims to promote public awareness and understanding of science.

Science Events and Centres

• Aboriginal Summer School for Excellence in Technology and Science (ASSETS) – An annual 9-10 day residential program for Indigenous students from around Australia to experience a rich curriculum of science, maths and technology delivered by leading teachers and scientists. The program also offers a cultural component and is based at the Australian Science and Maths School.
• National Science Week– Australia’s annual celebration of Science and Technology, with more than 1000 science events around the nation, encouraging an interest in science pursuits among the general public.
• Primary Industry Centre for Science and Education (PICSE) – A national initiative providing Primary Industries-based teacher and student resources to help today’s students become tomorrow’s scientists. They have a range of activities which include an industry placement scholarship, Science investigation awards, a year 9/10 science camp, Teacher Professional Development and Science for Growth Awards.
